Ancient Vault – Alchemist Walkthrough (Powerful Alchemy Quest)

The Alchemist — Balthazar — unlocks potions, spells and caster armor at your base, making his rescue one of the highest-value quests in the early-to-mid game. The quest (“Powerful Alchemy”) triggers from your Flame Altar once you have progressed the crafter quests; here is the full route through his Ancient Vault.

Where is the Alchemist’s vault?

On the far western side of the map. A recommended approach: do the “A Story of Fire” quest first — it leaves you near an obelisk close to the vault. From there, drop north off the cliff and glide down, following the dirt road to the Flame ruins.

How do you clear the vault?

1. Outside: the ruins are crawling with Scavengers. Clear them methodically before entering — rushing past just pulls them all at once
2. Lore detour: before going in, check the southern side of the outer area for a lore page (“Stashed our Haul”) on a table — it starts a small side quest (Scavenger Stash)
3. First junction: inside, the path splits left and right — both lead to the same back room, but go left and check around the first corner for a hidden door with a chest behind it
4. Back room: kill the Scavenger pack, then head downstairs first — destroy the wooden boards blocking the side staircase for a chest

What is the spike-bridge chest?

The vault’s signature trap: a bridge over a magma pool with a chest at the far end. The moment you open the chest, spikes begin erupting through the bridge — but they do not all fire at once. Sprint back immediately, dodging the pattern; the staggered timing gives you a safe window. Loot: a solid mid-game chest roll.

Where is the Alchemist?

Back upstairs in the back room, take the stairs to the second floor and follow the hallway into the central chamber — Balthazar floats in his survival pod, guarded by a few more Scavengers. Deal with them and free his soul (you will see “Soul Discovered! Balthazar”).

How do you finish the quest?

Return to your base and summon Balthazar at the Flame Altar — he then takes his place among your crafters. His stations (Grinding Stones, Alchemy Station, Laboratory) unlock health potions and, later, spells and caster armor — the full potion recipe ladder is worth planning around if you run a mage build. His follow-up quests recover tools like his Mortar to expand his recipe list.

What should you prepare?

• Bandages/health potions and a repaired weapon — it is a long fight chain
• A pickaxe (rubble and boards both break)
• Free inventory space for three chests’ worth of loot
