Enshrouded Server Hosting Comparison — Self-Host vs Rent vs VPS

Compare the three ways to run an Enshrouded server: hosting on your own PC, renting a game server, or a VPS — with costs, effort and who each suits.

The Enshrouded server software is free, but “free” is only one part of the hosting equation — uptime, bandwidth and maintenance all cost something. Here is how the three real options compare.

A Flameborn base at dusk — the kind of world worth keeping online 24/7

What are the three options?

Player-hosted world Your own dedicated server Rented game server / VPS
Cost Free Free software; your hardware + power Roughly $10–20/month
Uptime Only while the host plays 24/7 if the machine stays on 24/7, managed
Setup effort Zero Medium (SteamCMD, ports) Low (web panel)
Performance Limited by the host’s PC You control the hardware Guaranteed tier
Crossplay (1.0) ✅ ✅ ✅

When should you just host a world yourself?

If you and two or three friends play at the same times, the built-in player-hosted world is all you need: open your save, invite through the Social tab, done. No setup, no cost. The limits: the world disappears when you log off, and your friends’ experience depends on your PC and connection. For casual groups, this is the right default — upgrade only when “is the host online?” becomes a recurring question.

When is your own dedicated server worth it?

When your group wants a persistent world and you have a spare Windows machine (or a Linux box comfortable with Proton/Wine — see the platform trap in our setup guide). You pay in electricity and maintenance instead of rent. This suits technical players who want full control of the server settings and don’t mind handling port forwarding, updates and backups themselves. Remember the hard requirements: ~8.3 GB disk, UDP 15637 open, and updates whenever Keen patches the game.

When should you rent instead?

Renting a game server or a small VPS makes sense when: you want 24/7 uptime without leaving hardware on; your group is spread across time zones; or nobody wants to be the part-time sysadmin. Typical game-server plans for 16-player survival titles run roughly $10–20 per month depending on slot count, location and billing period — more than the game itself, so weigh it against how many hours your group actually plays. The upside is real: web-based config panels, one-click updates and backups, DDoS protection, and support when something breaks at 2 a.m.

How do you choose a host?

Judge providers on four things rather than brand names:

  1. Location — pick a server region closest to most players; ping decides combat feel
  2. Honest specs — Enshrouded servers like fast single-thread CPU performance and RAM headroom; avoid the cheapest tiers
  3. Panel quality — you will live in the web panel for config edits and restarts
  4. Backup policy — automated daily backups are worth paying a little extra for

Most established game-server hosts support Enshrouded with one-click installs; if you prefer raw control, any Windows-capable VPS works with the standard SteamCMD install.

Which option is best for crossplay with PS5 friends?

All three work with 1.0 crossplay — the deciding factor is uptime, not platform. PS5 friends join through the same server browser regardless of where the server runs. Details and edge cases live in our crossplay status guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move a player-hosted world to a dedicated server later? Yes — copy the save into the server’s save directory. This is the standard upgrade path.

Is a dedicated server overkill for solo play? Usually yes, unless you specifically want a persistent world to dip in and out of from different devices.

What happens to my server when the game patches? Self-hosted: you update via SteamCMD (app_update 2278520 validate). Rented: the host handles it — verify they patch promptly, since version mismatches block logins.
